We asked you to nominate everyday heroes for our Community Smiles contest by explaining how they help make our community smile, and you delivered!
We’re excited to announce U.S.VETS – Las Vegas as the November winner of our Community Smiles prize: a $1,000 Visa gift card and a Smile Appreciation Basket filled with goodies! The local veterans nonprofit was recognized for its team’s efforts in making military veterans and their families smile by helping them with housing, counseling, career development, and comprehensive support.
“We do this work because we believe that veterans should never have to sleep on the streets they fought to defend,” said Michelle Johnston, director of behavioral health for U.S.VETS – Las Vegas. “We’re so appreciative of the people who nominated us and this opportunity through Move 4 Less. When we receive recognition, it validates that we are not alone in this fight.”
Johnston also said they plan to use the Visa gift card on services for veterans not allowed under their VA grant. “The flexibility of a gift card allows us to provide services and support that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.”
When asked about choosing U.S.VETS, Maggie Kolesar, general sales manager for Move 4 Less, said the community’s enormous support was clear.
“There were so many nominations for U.S.VETS, and each one spoke the heart of what they do for our veteran community here in Las Vegas,” said Kolesar. “Folks in the community talked about how they help re-house and move these veterans who sacrificed and gave so much of their lives for our country. And unfortunately, they are just in a hard place and need help. It’s heartwarming that there are people out there whose mission is to take care of our veterans the way they do!”
According to Kolesar, Move 4 Less is always looking for a way to give back to the same community that has supported them for more than 18 years. “Since the Move 4 Less mission is to create smiles on moving day, the Community Smiles initiative aligned perfectly with our values and desire to give back to the city we love. We want to acknowledge the people in our lives whose generosity and kindness tend to fly under the radar because it’s important for people to be recognized, especially when they least expect it.”
