It’s the most wonderful time of the year for sports lovers in Las Vegas! Our favorite teams are returning to the fields, courts and diamonds, and you’ll find us in the stands to see how they fare this season.
Here are some fun facts about our top six local teams to root for this fall.
1. Las Vegas Aviators:
The Las Vegas Aviators of the Pacific Coast Triple A League are the city’s oldest professional sports team. Following rebranding in 2019, the community was invited to submit their team name ideas, leading to hundreds of submissions.
“Aviators” was a popular choice amongst Nevadans. It’s a nod to the original owner of the company, Howard R. Hughes, Jr., and his passion for aviation. Get your cracker jacks and watch this dynamite team hit a home run this fall.
2. Las Vegas Lights FC:
The Las Vegas Lights FC team was created with the goal of bringing professional soccer to southern Nevada. The soccer team embraces its Las Vegas roots through neon colors in its crest and jerseys, as well as drawing attention with llama mascots and rewarding players with casino chips.
Lights players have a partnership with the Plaza Hotel & Casino, through which the casino will give everyone on the team $100 in gaming chips each time the team scores three or more goals in a home win. Catch them playing in the United Soccer League Championship and see if they get lucky!
3. Las Vegas Raiders:
You’ve likely seen the raving fans of the Las Vegas Raiders. Decked out in black and silver costumes, Raider Nation is known for its rough and tumble cult following, but the players also live up to the reputation. In 1985, linebacker Matt Millen punched Patriots general manager Patrick Sullivan following a loss in an AFC divisional round playoff game.
The team moved its franchise from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020 after it was promised a first-class stadium in a diverse community—exactly the type of destination Vegas is known for. Check out their schedule, get decked out and party with Raider Nation.
4. Vegas Golden Knights:
Formed in 2017, the Vegas Golden Knights bring a diverse range of players to the T-Mobile Arena. During the World Championships in 2019, defenceman Shea Theodore was surprised to be flagged for the hormone HCG after a drug test. The hormone is typically found in pregnant women, but can also indicate testicular cancer, which the defenceman was diagnosed with and successfully treated for.
The Golden Knights managed to reach the Stanley Cup Finals in the 2017-2018 season, their first year as an NHL team. Catch their next home game and see if they can bring home the cup!
5. Las Vegas Aces:
The Las Vegas Aces team started in Utah and played a stint in Texas prior to calling Vegas home. They received the first pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft, and chose South Carolina’s A’ja Wilson, a three-time winner of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Year Award.
The team plays with orange and oatmeal colored balls, which was originally a marketing strategy to help the WNBA balls stand out in stores. You’ll love watching the team sink shot after shot at their fast-paced home games.
