Going to college is an exciting milestone! You want to feel ready to focus on your studies, and not be bogged down by the details of moving into your dorm. To simplify the process, we’ve put together three ways to make packing and moving to college easier.

1. Find Out What You Need:

Before you begin packing, make a checklist of necessary items. Note what furniture your room already has, and specific things you’ll need like sheets, laundry and bathroom essentials. Don’t forget to have a conversation with your roommate about which items you might be able to share.

2. Sort Your Belongings:

Organize your items based on what you need for school, and what you want to leave at home or in storage. Dorm rooms can be small, so packing the essentials will make for a less cramped experience. Remove all packaging from the items you’ve bought for school to speed up the process and take up less space. Create a pile of things you can donate or sell to lighten your load.

3. Make the Most Of What You’ve Got:

Tracking down and assembling cardboard boxes takes time and effort. Instead, put your laundry bins, baskets, and plastic totes to good use. You can use these bins for storage later, if necessary. If you’ve got friends and family who are available to help you move, recruit them. Many hands make light work, and having some familiar faces around to support you will take some of the stress out of moving.
