It seems like just yesterday it was summer! Suddenly, you’re searching for coats, hats, gloves, and more! What happened? Well, it’s likely you packed them all. Check out our tips to help you prepare for your move in the winter months.

Make sure you have your move checklists ready to go. Don’t have one yet, you can find them in our previous blogs on how to get ready for a move no matter what type of season it is.

Ever thought about having a moving go-bag? it’s a good idea to have this in your vehicle to help your move run smoothly. These items include:

  • Water (essential during Summer but also VERY important in Winter!)
  • Chapstick and lotions
  • Extra gloves
  • Hot Hands (hand-warming packets)
  • Snack Bars / Meal Bars
  • Roadside Assistance Kit
  • Extra cell phone battery (Here are some of Amazon’s BEST sellers!)

You would be surprised how many people forget to drink water in the winter! Moving in the winter is just as much as a physical activity as it would be in summer, just a little bit cooler. Drinking water will help you stary hydrates through-out the day.  Some people even use hydration packets to mix in with her water such as Pedialyte to keep hydrated. It’s also a good idea to keep a cooler filled with snacks or chilled water.

Before you start packing essentials and clothes, take a moment and pull out a coat, hat, gloves, scarf, and boots for each person that is moving with you. While you might not encounter cold or winter-like conditions in Las Vegas, the weather may not be in your favor depending on where you’re moving to. Luckily, if you’re moving from Las Vegas in the middle of winter, the most you might encounter is a little bit of chill. Once you leave the state, however, all bets are off! Systems can move rapidly just like they do in summer and some may be very unpredictable depending on your path out of town.

If you’ve lived in Las Vegas for quite some time, you may want to consider getting a car tune-up before your trip out of town. If you’re staying in town, there’s not much to worry about but moving from Las Vegas to Colorado…you might want to check your car out before it expects any temperature that it is not a custom to. Fluid levels change all the time and while your movers and their trucks are able to stay maintained with predicted conditions, your vehicle may need a glance over.

If you’re staying in the valley it is unlikely that you will have to prepare your home or outside area for unsafe conditions like sidewalks and pathways covered in snow, sleet, or hail that lead into your home. But if you are moving to a colder state, you may want to consider prepping well in advance for your movers and yourself to be safe upon arrival.

A couple of things to consider in your new location should it be in a weather zone are these tips:

  • Salting any areas that might take on extra loads or traffic.
  • Plastic coverings for floors and pathways inside your home to protect from rains, sleets, and dirt.
  • Boot coverings to help you and your crew move about the home beyond the covered areas.
  • Extra towels are available for spills, leaks, and unknown weather moments.

Other things to consider when moving in winter:

  • Plan to be flexible! Weather conditions change at a moment’s notice, and there needs to be communication between your moving company, your family members, or anyone helping you move. Communication and planning are essential.
  • Extra time. Not only will you have to consider schedule changes, but you might need to consider allowing extra time for things to happen considering weather delays. Sometimes traffic becomes a little tricky when there are snow plows out, accidents, and roadways being serviced causing detours. Also having any sort of weather condition other than clear on the road will likely cause a delay.
  • Daylight hours disappear! Remember in the winter we have shorter days, making it a little bit more difficult to move. You may not have a lot of light to utilize outside, so having other light sources available will be very helpful. Otherwise, you can just plan around the shorter timeframe of available light hours.

As a bonus, don’t forget to have some hot cocoa or cider available for your crew and yourself to celebrate a wintery move! As always, if you need any help in moving or packing your home, you can call us!
