Despite battling cancer, Calvin Kuehl is still making people smile through kind gestures, a positive attitude, and his larger-than-life smile. He received the most nominations in January, and we’re thrilled to announce Kuehl as the January winner of our Community Smiles prize: a $1,000 Visa gift card and a Smile Appreciation Basket filled with goodies!
Kuehl is a retired marble and tile setter who lives with his wife of 38 years, Elaine, who nominated him every day in January. She says her husband amazes her every day with his kindness.
“Calvin is a kind soul and insists on helping people as much as he can. It’s what he does, ever since we first met,” wrote Elaine in her nomination. “He would say, ‘this person needs help’ or ‘this person told me he has no food to eat.’ We can help them and invite them to dinner. Kindness does not cost a thing.”
Kuehl has had a tough year battling colon and throat cancer, and now he has chemotherapy for liver cancer three times a month. But according to nominator Jazmin Marzan, this hasn’t stopped him from inspiring and motivating those around him.
“Calvin has been through such a tough year battling liver cancer, but nothing keeps him down or from helping in his community. He is such an inspiration to others,” wrote Marzan in her nomination. “He is always saying, ‘Hello, how are you?’ and ‘How is your day?’ He believes if you do not see a smile on someone’s face, give them one of yours.”
Kuehl was honored with a surprise presentation that Elaine had planned for him after coming home from one of his chemo treatments. He thought something was up but couldn’t figure out what it was. “I had a feeling something was going on, but that is just like Elaine to do,” Kuehl said of the recognition and ceremony. “This is so much more than I could’ve imagined.”
“Calvin Kuehl is the perfect example of why we developed this program,” said Maggie Kolesar, Move 4 Less general sales manager. “He is such a kind man who exudes positivity. We were so glad to meet Calvin and Elaine and present this award and prizes to them. They truly made us smile.”
Congratulations to Calvin Kuehl for winning our third and final Community Smiles nomination, and thank you for all you do to bring smiles to our community!
